So the song goes on the founding of
Ireland. Thus this area must have seemed to the Irish when they
came to Cuffey's Cove. The town of Cuffey's Cove was a
thriving shipping port with a population of between three and four hundred
inhabitants, mostly Irish. According to local lore, someone posted a sign
at the mill reading, "No Irish Need Apply."
The next morning another handwritten sign was nailed below: "Whoever wrote
this, wrote it well, The same is written on the Gates of
Hell" The early Irish organized the Native
Sons of Little Ireland and celebrated the memory of their homeland by
sponsoring the annual Saint Patrick's observation.
When the mill at Cuffey's Cove shut down in the 1890's, the operation moved to Greenwood/Elk.
Along with the mill and the people moved the annual Saint Patrick's
Party. The tradition continues with members
of the Blessed Sacrament Church Altar Society sponsoring the Saint
Patrick's Dinner and Dance each year. We will soon be celebrating our 115th
party.
